Running tips that you can learn from my dog!

My coach always said "HAVE A PLAN, AND RUN YOUR PLAN!".  Today I ran the 12k's of Christmas run with my dog Easton. I am 100% positive that my dog did not have a plan, if he did, it's a bad plan! It was a great event with lots to do and see. It benefited the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control.  Which is why Easton and I felt compelled to do this run.  Easton dressed as Santa and I wore a festive red shirt. Easton is also VERY disappointed that he did not win an award for Cutest Pet, especially when only two dogs dressed up, six dogs ran and they gave awards 1st-4th (see sad face on right). We did accomplish our goal FINISH, but it was not a run that Easton should repeat without rethinking this plan.

Easton broke all the rules of running and reasons for having a plan.  I hope you can learn something from his mistakes.

1) Always put your outfit out the night before your run ~
Easton blames me for this, but we had to hunt for his Santa Suit and then it would not Velcro in the front. It worked but caused unnecessary stress, not good for race day.
2) Arrive early ~

We arrived about 5 minutes before the run and maneuvered our way to the end of the start line. Partly by design to ensure that East was a good dog to others.
3) Go to the bathroom three times before the race begins~
We started the race, ran ten feet and Easton had to poop right after crossing the start! How embarrassing with all those people cheering him on.  Then a nice guy offered to throw the baggie out so we could continue.
4) Be polite to other runners and dogs~
While he has improved, he does not like when he cannot chase and play with other dogs.
5) Stay in your path ~
Easton likes to wander to the left then back close to mom.  Almost tripping some people.
6) Stay on the Course~
Easton saw a very nice lake and decided to wade in the lake for a few minutes, just a little cool off.
7) Finish Strong
About 200 feet from the finish Easton decided it would be more fun to go get the food and drinks and quit right by the food table.

As you can see, Easton was not the ideal running partner today, however it is always nice to have a companion to run with. He did great for his first time at this distance.  He did have fun, and checked out ALL the cute doggie photos on the course. Now he is resting.
